Troubleshooting Star Issues

Something in your Kaneva Star not living up to your expectations? Here's some answers to issues you and others are encountering with Stars.

Kaneva monitors the Beta Star forum for new developments. If you don't see an answer posted for your question, please post a message to the Beta Star forum and please describe the issue in detail, what steps you took to arrive at the issue, and any other information you think would help us arrive at an answer (including the answer, if you know it!)

Star Installer

"3ds Max was not located on this computer..."

If you chose the STAR Full install or selected to install the 3ds Max Exporter tool, the following message may appear if the Star Installer can't find the plugins folder for your version of 3ds Max :

3ds Max was not located on this computer.

Note that the current STAR Exporter application is compatible with 3ds Max versions 8 and 9, but does not support 3ds Max version 2009. This issue will be resolved with a future STAR platform release.

To copy the Exporter into the proper 3ds Max folder:

  1. Locate and copy the KanevaPlugin.dle file, which is located (by default) in the C:\Program Files\Kaneva\STARPlatform\bin folder.
  2. Locate the plugins folder of your 3ds Max installation. Usually this folder is located at C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 9\plugins.
  3. Paste the KanevaPlugin.dle file you copied from step 1 into this folder.

"Setup could not detect Microsoft Internet Information Server..."

The STAR Installer cannot find compatible versions of IIS (Internet Information Server) installed on your computer. This may occur if IIS is not installed, or for versions of Windows that do not include IIS as part of their available software.

Star Editor

Textures do not appear as expected in the viewport.

TIP If your zone's textures 'disappear' or appear darkened after using Kaneva Star Editor Reinitialize Textures Reinitialize Textures or after placing your actor, you can restore the textures:

Kaneva Star Editor Adding Textures to texture database

  1. Select Add Texture tool Add Texture from the Objects > Textures command panel. Kaneva Star Editor displays the Add Texture dialog.
  2. Select Browse (the '...' to the right of the Texture Names label) to display the Open dialog, and then select the following textures from your MapsModels or ExampleFiles\Assets\Textures folder (use the Ctrl key to select multiple textures):
    • board.dds
    • brick.dds
    • brickstone.dds
    • cement.dds
    • rock.dds
    • sky.dds
    • water.dds
  3. Select the Kaneva Star Editor Reinitialize Textures Reinitialize Textures tool to reset zone object textures.
  4. Select Update Actor tool Update Actor from Objects > Actors > Runtime/In Use to reset your Actor's textures.

Star Server

Error 1069: The service did not start due to a logon failure.

This process can be used for all Kaneva processes:

  • KGPServer: The actual Star Server, which runs your Star world for multiple concurrent players.
  • KGPController: Star Server support service, which provides support to the administrative interface (KEPAdmin) and other systems.

Verify that your Windows (not Kaneva) user name and password are correct for the services login credentials:

  1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Windows displays the Services control panel.
  2. Locate and right-click the KGPServer service and select Properties.
  3. Select the Log On tab and verify that you are signing on an account, and not as Local System.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Right-click the KGPServer service and select Start.
