Kaneva STAR: Preinstallation
This topic deals with decisions and information you may find useful before you install the Kaneva Star Platform.
Evaluating your needs
- Compatible software and hardware. Kaneva Star was designed for Windows XP environments, but should run on Windows Vista. Virtualized Windows systems, such as VMWare, Parallels, or Apple BootCamp may require adjustments to provide compatible graphics configurations. Kaneva has concentrated operational tests of the Kaneva Star Platform on Windows XP and Windows Vista as of this writing.
- Designate a Star Administrator. This person or account will manage administrative and personnel aspects on the %SWEB%, including member access to your organization's Star resources.
Checklist for New STAR Development
Here are some considerations you want to have decided before you begin your Star Development.
- What Company Name will you use to register on the Star Developer web site? During closed Beta, your organization's name is created for you.
- What email address(es) will need Star accounts to access your registered Stars and Star Game Servers? During the closed Beta, it's important to keep Kaneva informed of new members on your team, as access to Star resources is manually maintained.
- What name will you choose for your Star?
-
WARNING: The Star name you choose is permanent and cannot be changed in this version. (A future version of the Star software will allow changes.) This is the name that will be used to reserve and provision resources when you are ready to deploy your Star to testers, evaluators, and external parties (such as the general public).
- What is/are the computer name(s) that will host the Star server(s)? Star servers are dedicated to running your world design.
- The computer name is available from your System control panel under the Computer Name tab.
- At least one Star server must be defined to run your Star, even if you are testing locally.
- Each Star server must match up with a unique computer name. Future Star versions will automatically populate the computer name when you request a new Star server.
- You can create, edit, and delete as many Star servers as are required for your development, testing, and production purposes.
- When working as part of a team, you may want to dedicate one or more computers as Star servers that will always be available to you and your team members for testing, staging, production, and so on.
