Installation of your Star software

Installing Kaneva Star is easy and fun. Kaneva provides the capability to automatically upgrade supporting software, register your Star, and install and configure the MySQL database software and tables. In a few minutes, you'll be ready to start designing your Star, or continue working on an existing Star.

Here's what you'll accomplish during installation:

• Sign in to the Star Developer web site
• Download the Kaneva Star Platform
• Install Kaneva Star (and MySQL database and schema, if you don't have one)
• What to do next

Downloading the Star Platform Installer

To download the Kaneva Star installation software:

1. From the Kaneva Star Developer web site, click Sign In at the top right and sign in using your email address and password.

   Kaneva displays the My STARS Management page.
   
   
2. Click the Resources tab at the top right of the page.

3. Select the Download STARs here link. Your web browser displays your options to download the installer program.
4. Depending on your web browser, choose to Save or Run the downloaded file. Kaneva begins the file download of the Kaneva Star Platform.

Installing Kaneva Star Platform on your computer

After you've downloaded the Kaneva Star Platform from the Kaneva Star Developer web site, you're ready to install the platform on your computer:

1. Are you continuing the installer program directly from the download or running it from a saved copy?
   Run from download : Click Run to start the installation. Windows starts running the Kaneva Star installer.
   
   Running from saved copy : Double-click the installer program where you saved it on your hard drive.
   
   Windows starts the installer program.
   
   
2. If you're at a computer that already has Kaneva Star Platform installed, Kaneva displays a request to uninstall.

   Click Yes and then confirm to uninstall the existing system.
   
   The installer displays a message when the uninstall is complete.

3. Proceed through the Welcome screen and click 'I Agree' on the License Agreement to continue the installation.

4. Choose the type of installation you want to perform from the Choose Components page, and then click Next.

5. Choose the location where you want to install Kaneva Star Platform, and then click Install.

   Depending on your choices, Kaneva installs Kaneva Star Platform and other required components. This process may take a few moments to complete.
   
   
6. Do you have the MySQL database server software installed on this computer?
   • Yes : Kaneva uses your existing MySQL setup to create the databases and tables it needs for design and operation.

     1. Click Next.
   • No : Kaneva installs the MySQL Server software and then creates the databases.

     1. Click Install MySQL. The installer displays a series of pages to install the MySQL Server software.
     2. Click Next on the MySQL installation pages to continue installation.
     3. Provide and confirm a password for the database server and press Set Password. Kaneva recommends that you choose a secure password that is difficult to guess.

     4. Click Next.
7. Provide the host, port, user, and password credentials to sign into your MySQL server as root. Kaneva requires root permissions to create databases and tables.

   Click Next.
   
   If MySQL was installed by Kaneva, the default settings for installation on the same computer are:
   • Host: localhost
   • Port: 3306
   • User: root
   • Password: Your choice, from previous step.
8. If your computer contains an existing Star database schema, the Star installer requests that you drop the databases to continue. Click Yes to each request if dropping the tables will not lose unsaved data, or No if you need to halt installation and back up these databases.
9. You're done installing Kaneva Star Platform!

   Now you can:
   • View Readme Display the release notes for tips and known issues.
   • Start the Editor Opens the Star Studio Editor at the main window.
   • Create a New Star Opens the Star Studio Editor with the New Star wizard.
   • Quit Ends the Star Installer.
